Workshops

Studying behaviour with RNASeq and Differential Gene Expression analysis

Dr. Jade Sourisse MARE - University of Lisbon

This workshop will introduce the use of transcriptomics in behavioural research to biologists new to -omics. Through a guided hands-on activity requiring only a laptop and Internet access, participants will learn to process RNASeq data, identify differentially expressed genes across conditions, and explore the biological functions of such genes. Participants will first receive an introduction to transcriptomics and an overview of its relevance to behavioural research. Then, they will use the Galaxy online platform to conduct RNASeq data processing and Differential Gene Expression analysis, with step-by-step guidance from the coordinator and from her presentation. Participants will gain the opportunity to develop interdisciplinary skills and discover online, free resources to run bioinformatic analyses.

Listening underwater: A Workshop on Underwater Sound Recordings

Dr. Manuel Vieira; MARE - University of Lisbon

Join us as we dive into the captivating world of aquatic bioacoustics. This hands-on workshop offers an opportunity to explore and test techniques and tools for capturing sounds in underwater environments. Participants will learn about hydrophones, recording equipment, and various deployment methods for different aquatic settings. Through guided exercises and demonstrations, you will gain practical experience recording sounds in fish tanks while discovering key details to consider for effective underwater recording. Whether you're a marine enthusiast, a researcher, or simply curious about the sounds beneath the waves, this workshop is perfect for anyone eager to uncover the hidden treasures of the underwater world.

Ethics and welfare in Aquatic Animal Experimentation

Dr. Tiago Repolho, MARE - University of Lisbon

This workshop, led by Dr. Tiago Repolho, a member of ORBEA-FCUL (Animal Welfare Body of the Faculty of Sciences, University of Lisbon), and former head of the Aquatic Facilities at the Biomedical Services from the University of Oxford, will provide a comprehensive overview of ethical considerations and licensing requirements in aquatic animal experimentation for scientific research. Participants discuss the principles and regulations guiding ethical decision-making in aquatic animal research. Participants will also benefit from a visit to the aquatic facilities at Laboratório Marítimo da Guia, where they will gain hands-on insights into the practical aspects of managing animal welfare in research settings. The visit includes a walkthrough of life support systems used to maintain aquatic organisms in experimental conditions, offering an in-depth understanding of best practices in system design and maintenance to ensure optimal animal care. The workshop aims to equip researchers with the knowledge and tools necessary to conduct ethically responsible and legally compliant animal research.
